JEFF
WAYNE'S MUSICAL VERSION
The musical version of 'The War of the Worlds' is possibly the best novel to musical conversion ever done. Jeff Wayne's musical version of the story thrilled the 1970's musical audience, and created a lot of interest in the original story.
Released in 1978 by Ollie Records the musical tells the tale of the original novel. There are very few changes from Wells original tale, apart from our narrator not being married, instead there is a lost love for him to chase, and instead of his bother making his way out of the country, he personally attempts to leave England. The musical featured the voice talents of many already famous artists, such as David Essex, Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy (already famous for their song 'The Boys are Back in Town') and and The Moody Blues' Justin Hayward. The narrator was non other than Richard Burton. Several songs from that musical are still popular today, I have occasionally heard 'Forever Autumn' on the radio and even the main theme has it's share of air time. There is talk of a remake or revamp of the musical somehow, Jeff Wayne had apparently been in contact with Pendragon Pictures about a tie in between the new film and a relaunch. We'll have to see what comes of that... The Musical is available on Double CD, as well as a 'Highlights from' version. There is even a remix album available, where the original songs have been given a dance floor feel. It's very good, although, I never did see it in the charts. All these are still available at good record stores. Read a transcript of the musical here READ ABOUT OTHER EXCITING DEVELOPMENTS FOR 2005 Cast - The War of the Worlds
