Original Novel - Locations
The original novel takes the reader on a Journey around the south east of England, as the martians advance on London.

The martians first land on Horsell Common near Woking in the south east of England. They set up camp there as more of their invasion cylinders landed at midnight for the next 10 nights. Horsell Common was an area of shrub and grass land about 2 miles outside Woking. The area today no longer contains shrubs, but fully grown trees.

Today Woking celebrates it's links to the martians. In April 1998 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the original novel a statute of a martian fighting machine was erected in the town center. The huge metal figure designed by Michael Condron is sculpted to look like it is marching on the town center from the direction of Horsell Common.
