Pendragon, had secretly been filming their version of the story over several months. Thier verison of the film varies from the paramount film as they have gone for a direct retelling of the original novel. Pendragon released a press statement shortly after completing principle photography, it can be read here

Rumours first appeared back in early 2001 that Pendragon Pictures where in the process of making a new modernised version of the HG Wells classic. The story would be set around Seattle and would (I'd say) include a lot of destruction of cities and people. The concept art had a great feel to it, sort of Ridley Scott's Alien feel. Very dark, very scary. The events of September 11th put everything into perspective, a film with destroyed buildings and invaders would not have gone down well. The film was knocked back from it's October 2002 release date and moved too sometime in 2005. Michael Caine was rumoured to have been approached for the film and the new storyline (which was heavily rewritten) was to be a direct telling of the original novel (a very very wise choice in my opinion)
